Was ist Thyme?
Common thyme is a small, woody, bee-loved shrub of the western Mediterranean. Tradition has it that the Egyptians used it in embalming, the Greeks burned it as incense and medieval ladies tucked it into knights' scarves as a sign of courage. Its warm, savoury flavour comes largely from thymol and carvacrol, the same antiseptic phenols found in oregano — thymol is still an active ingredient in some mouthwashes today.
Thyme is a traditional European cough remedy, and it is one of the few culinary herbs with respectable clinical backing for that use: combination products of thyme with ivy leaf or primrose root have been tested in placebo-controlled trials for acute bronchitis, with coughing fits easing faster than on placebo. Thyme alone is less well studied, and none of this replaces medical care for a serious chest infection.
Wirkung & Anwendungsgebiete
Eases cough in acute bronchitis (combinations)
In placebo-controlled trials, syrups combining thyme with ivy leaf or with primrose root reduced coughing fits faster in adults with acute bronchitis. European herbal regulators recognise thyme as a traditional remedy for productive cough with colds.
Soothing tea for colds
Thyme tea with honey is a long-standing home remedy for tickly throats and chesty coughs. Evidence for the tea itself is traditional, but it is warming, safe and pleasant.
Antiseptic compounds
Thymol and carvacrol kill many bacteria and fungi in the lab, which is why thymol is used in some mouthwashes and dental products. Eating thyme does not disinfect your body, but a thyme gargle may freshen the mouth.
Deep savoury flavour
Thyme is a backbone of French, Mediterranean and Caribbean cooking, adding savoury depth that helps you use less salt in stews, beans and roasts.

In cooking
Add whole sprigs to stews, stocks, braises and roasting trays early on and fish out the stems later, or strip leaves by running your fingers down the stem. Classic in bouquet garni with parsley and bay.
Cough tea
1–2 tsp dried thyme (or a few fresh sprigs) per cup of just-boiled water, covered, 10 minutes. Strain, add honey and lemon; up to 3 cups daily while you have a cough. (No honey for babies under one year.)
Ready-made cough syrups
Thyme–ivy and thyme–primrose syrups are widely sold in European pharmacies. Follow the label dose and age limits; these are the forms that were actually tested in trials.
Steam inhalation
Put a handful of fresh sprigs (or a spoonful of dried thyme) in a bowl of hot water and breathe the steam under a towel for a few minutes. Not for young children — risk of scalds.
Grow it
Thrives in poor, well-drained soil and full sun; lemon thyme and creeping thymes are worth growing too. Trim after flowering to stop it turning woody.
⚠️ Vorsichtshinweise
- Culinary use is safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Medicinal doses (strong teas taken daily, extracts, syrups) lack safety data in pregnancy — check with a midwife, doctor or pharmacist first.
- Thyme essential oil must not be swallowed and should not be applied undiluted; it is irritating and toxic in quantity. Keep it away from children and pets — cats are particularly sensitive to phenolic oils.
- High medicinal doses may theoretically slow blood clotting; if you take anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs, or have surgery planned, mention thyme supplements to your doctor.
- People allergic to other mint-family plants (oregano, basil, sage, lavender) may also react to thyme.
- See a doctor for a cough lasting more than three weeks, coughing up blood, breathlessness, high fever or chest pain — herbal remedies are for ordinary colds only.

Häufige Fragen
Does thyme tea really help a cough?
Thyme is a respected traditional cough herb, and syrups combining thyme with ivy or primrose have done well in trials. Plain thyme tea is less tested, but it's a safe, soothing choice for a common cold.
How much dried thyme equals fresh?
Roughly 1 teaspoon dried leaves for 1 tablespoon fresh, or about 6 average sprigs. Dried thyme keeps its flavour better than most dried herbs.
Is lemon thyme the same?
It's a close relative with a citrus scent and lower thymol content. It's lovely with fish, chicken and in teas, but most studies used common thyme.
