Qu'est-ce que Rosemary ?

Rosemary is a woody, needle-leaved evergreen of the Mediterranean coast, so central to European kitchens and folk medicine that its name means "dew of the sea". Greek students wore rosemary garlands while studying; Shakespeare's Ophelia calls it the herb "for remembrance".

Its reputation rests on aromatic compounds — 1,8-cineole, rosmarinic acid and carnosic acid — that are antioxidant and mildly circulation-stimulating. Small modern trials have linked rosemary aroma and low oral doses to measurably better memory scores, making the old association more than poetry.

Bienfaits et usages

1

May sharpen memory and alertness

In small trials, rosemary aroma improved speed and accuracy on memory tasks, and 750 mg of dried leaf powder improved recall in older adults; higher doses, interestingly, did worse.

2

Supports scalp and hair

Rosemary oil massaged into the scalp performed comparably to 2% minoxidil for androgenetic hair loss in one 6-month trial, with less itching.

3

Antioxidant workhorse

Carnosic acid is potent enough that the extract is used industrially as a natural food preservative (E392).

4

Eases digestion of rich food

A traditional companion to roasted meats: rosemary stimulates bile flow, which helps fat digestion.

5

Circulation tradition

European herbalism uses rosemary baths and tea for cold hands, low blood pressure sluggishness, and convalescence.

Comment l'utiliser

In cooking

Whole sprigs in roasts, stews and potatoes (remove before serving), or finely chopped needles in bread, marinades and oils. Strong — start with a teaspoon of chopped needles per dish.

Tea

1 tsp dried (or a 5 cm fresh sprig) per cup, just-boiled water, covered, 5–10 minutes. Pleasantly piney; 1–2 cups a day.

Scalp oil

Dilute rosemary essential oil to 2–3% in a carrier (about 5 drops per teaspoon), massage into the scalp, leave at least 30 minutes before washing. Expect months, not weeks, for any hair effect.

Aroma while working

A sprig crushed between the fingers, or a drop of essential oil on a tissue at the desk — the memory studies used simple ambient scent.

⚠️ Précautions

  • Culinary amounts are fine in pregnancy, but avoid concentrated rosemary preparations and supplements — traditionally regarded as uterine-stimulating.
  • Essential oil is for external use only and must be diluted; never give to small children.
  • Very large oral doses can irritate the stomach and, rarely, trigger seizures in people with epilepsy.
  • May increase the effect of blood thinners in supplement doses.

Questions fréquentes

Fresh or dried for cooking?

Both work. Dried is more concentrated and woodier; fresh is brighter. Dried needles benefit from chopping or grinding — they stay needle-sharp otherwise.

Does the hair-loss use really work?

One decent trial found it comparable to low-dose minoxidil over 6 months. Promising and low-risk, but not a guarantee — consistency matters more than quantity.

Can I grow it indoors?

Only in your sunniest window — rosemary sulks without strong light and free-draining soil. Outdoors in a pot is easier; it shrugs off drought but hates wet feet.
