Was ist Flaxseed?

Flax is one of the oldest cultivated crops, grown in the Fertile Crescent for at least 9,000 years — for linen from its stems and for oil and food from its seeds. The small glossy seeds (also called linseed) are rich in soluble fibre that turns gel-like in water, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA, a plant omega-3), and lignans, plant compounds with weak oestrogen-like activity.

The evidence is reasonably solid for a food. Randomised trials show ground flaxseed eases constipation, modestly lowers LDL cholesterol, and — in several studies using about 30 g a day — lowers blood pressure. The catch: whole seeds often pass straight through undigested, so grinding is essential.

Wirkung & Anwendungsgebiete

1

Relieves constipation

The soluble fibre (mucilage) swells with water and softens stools. Small trials found ground flaxseed worked at least as well as some common fibre laxatives for chronic constipation, provided you drink plenty.

2

Lowers blood pressure

In several randomised trials, about 30 g (roughly 4 tablespoons) of ground flax daily for months lowered systolic and diastolic blood pressure, with larger effects in people with high blood pressure.

3

Modestly improves cholesterol

Meta-analyses of trials found whole or ground flaxseed (not flax oil) lowered total and LDL cholesterol by a small but meaningful amount, particularly in people with higher starting levels.

4

Plant omega-3 source

Flax is one of the richest sources of ALA. The body converts only a small fraction of ALA into the longer-chain omega-3s (EPA and DHA) found in fish, so it is useful but not a full replacement for oily fish.

5

Blood sugar and fullness

The fibre slows digestion; some small trials found flax improved blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes and increased feelings of fullness after meals.

Grind it

Grind whole seeds in a coffee or spice grinder, or buy pre-ground ("milled") flax. Store ground flax in an airtight jar in the fridge or freezer and use within a few weeks — its oils go rancid.

Daily amount

Start with 1 tablespoon a day and build up to 2–3 tablespoons (roughly 15–25 g) over a couple of weeks. Stir into porridge, yoghurt, smoothies or cereal, or add to bread and muffin mixes.

Drink water with it

Have at least a large glass of water or other fluid with each serving. Without enough liquid, the fibre can cause bloating or, rarely, block the bowel.

Flax egg

Mix 1 tbsp ground flax with 3 tbsp water and leave for 5 minutes; the gel replaces one egg in baking.

Flax oil

Cold-pressed flax oil provides ALA but no fibre or lignans. Use it cold on salads or vegetables — never for frying — and keep it refrigerated.

⚠️ Vorsichtshinweise

  • Raw and unripe flaxseed contains cyanogenic glycosides, which can release small amounts of cyanide. The amounts in normal servings (1–3 tbsp of mature seed a day) are considered safe; do not eat large quantities of raw seed, and never eat unripe seed. Baking or toasting reduces these compounds.
  • Bowel blockage: people with narrowed intestines, bowel obstruction or swallowing problems should avoid flax or ask their doctor first. Always take it with plenty of fluid.
  • Medications: fibre can reduce absorption of oral drugs, so take medicines 1 hour before or 2 hours after flaxseed. Flax may add to the effects of blood-thinning, blood-pressure and diabetes medication.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: food amounts are generally considered fine. Avoid large supplement doses of seed or lignan extracts, as their hormonal effects in pregnancy have not been well studied.
  • Hormone-sensitive conditions: lignans are weak phytoestrogens. Research has not shown harm in breast cancer and some studies suggest benefit, but discuss regular high intakes with your oncologist.
  • Allergy to flax is uncommon but can be serious; stop at once if you get itching, hives or breathing difficulty.

Häufige Fragen

Why do I need to grind flaxseed?

The hard seed coat often survives digestion intact, so whole seeds can pass straight through and deliver little ALA or lignans. Grinding breaks the coat open.

Is flaxseed oil as good as ground flaxseed?

Not for fibre or lignans — the oil contains neither. The cholesterol and constipation benefits come mostly from the whole ground seed.

Brown or golden flax?

Nutritionally they are very similar. Golden flax is a little milder in flavour and blends invisibly into light-coloured baking.
