¿Qué es Passionflower?
Passionflower, also called maypop, is a climbing vine native to the south-eastern United States, with astonishing purple-and-white fringed flowers. Spanish missionaries saw in its parts the symbols of the Passion of Christ — the crown of thorns, the nails, the wounds — hence the name. Native peoples used it as food and medicine, and 19th-century American doctors took it up as a sedative. The leaves and stems contain flavonoids such as vitexin and chrysin, along with small amounts of alkaloids.
Several small human trials suggest passionflower can reduce anxiety — including nerves before surgery or dental work — and may improve sleep quality. The studies are few and short, but the direction is encouraging. It seems to work partly through the brain's GABA system, the same calming system targeted by sleeping pills, though much more gently.
Beneficios y usos
May ease anxiety
Small placebo-controlled trials found passionflower extract reduced anxiety scores in people with generalised anxiety and before medical procedures. One small trial suggested effects comparable to a low dose of a prescription tranquilliser, with less impairment at work — interesting but in need of larger studies.
Calms nerves before procedures
Several trials found that a dose taken before surgery or dental treatment reduced anxiety without causing heavy sedation. Only use it this way with the agreement of your surgical or dental team.
Gentle sleep support
A small trial found a week of nightly passionflower tea improved people's ratings of their sleep quality. It pairs traditionally with valerian, hops or lemon balm in night-time blends.
Traditional use for restlessness
Historically used for nervous restlessness, tension headaches and stress-related stomach upset. These uses are traditional rather than well tested.
Cómo usarla
Tea
1 tsp (about 2 g) dried leaf and flower per cup, covered, 10 minutes. Mild and grassy; 1 cup in the evening for sleep, or up to 3 cups a day for daytime nerves.
Extract capsules or tablets
Doses in trials vary widely; follow the product label, typically a few hundred milligrams of extract once or twice daily. Try a first dose at home in the evening to see how drowsy it makes you.
Tincture
Commonly 1–2 ml in a little water up to three times a day, or before bed.
Blends
Look for night-time blends combining passionflower with valerian, lemon balm or hops — traditional pairings that are also used in some trialled products.
Make sure it's the right plant
Buy Passiflora incarnata from a reputable supplier. Other passionflower species, including the passion fruit vine (P. edulis), have different chemistry and their leaves are not interchangeable.
⚠️ Precauciones
- Don't combine with alcohol, sleeping pills, benzodiazepines, opioids, antihistamines that cause drowsiness or other sedatives — effects can add up. Mention it to your doctor if you take antidepressants or anti-seizure medicines.
- Can cause drowsiness, dizziness and confusion; don't drive or use machinery until you know how it affects you.
- Avoid in pregnancy — some compounds in passionflower may stimulate the womb. Also avoid while breastfeeding, as safety has not been established.
- Stop at least two weeks before surgery unless your medical team has agreed to its use, because it adds to anaesthetic and sedative drugs.
- Rare side effects include irregular heartbeat and inflamed blood vessels; stop and seek advice if you notice palpitations. Allergic reactions are uncommon.
- The unripe fruit and leaves of some other Passiflora species can contain cyanide-releasing compounds — another reason to use only properly identified P. incarnata products.

Preguntas frecuentes
Is passionflower the same plant as passion fruit?
They are close relatives. Passion fruit comes mostly from Passiflora edulis, while the calming herb is Passiflora incarnata. The ripe fruit of both is edible, but only P. incarnata leaf is the studied herb.
Is it habit-forming?
There is no evidence that passionflower causes dependence. It is much gentler than prescription sedatives — which also means it is not a substitute for treatment of a diagnosed anxiety disorder.
Can I take it during the day?
Many people use a cup of tea or a low dose for daytime nerves without feeling sleepy, but test it first on a day when you don't need to drive.
